Dress Code

What is the dress code at Wilson?

The school administration shall have the right to designate which types of dress, fashion, fads, or appearance disrupts or detract from the educational program and may be a potential safety hazard.

The following items are not allowed at Wilson MS:

  • Bandanas/stocking caps/hats except plain-blue Wilson hats
  • Bare midriffs or transparent see-through tops
  • Chains hanging from pants
  • Controversial/obscene slogan/advertising (e.g., alcohol/cigarettes) on clothing, notebooks or backpacks
  • Cutoffs/frayed shorts
  • Flip flops or sandals
  • Gloves
  • Holes, inappropriate rips, tears in clothes
  • Over-sized pants (pants must fit and be worn at waist; students may not use rubber bands to make their pants or shirts shorter)
  • Pajamas/sleepwear
  • P.E. clothes may not be worn in classes other than P.E. (unless authorized)
  • Short shorts (must be no shorter than tip of your fingers)
  • Spaghetti shoulder straps (must be at least two inches wide at shoulder)
  • Sports jerseys except on Fridays
  • Studded belts or jewelry
  • Sunglasses
  • Tank tops (must meet the top of the pants)
  • Visible underwear (including bra straps)

Consequences for Violations

1st offense: Warning, student will be asked to change out to Wilson clothing. Student clothing will be returned when loaner clothing has been washed and returned to the office. 

2nd offense: Warning, change out, guardian notified via warning referral

3rd offense: Warning, change out, guardian notified via referral, 1 day of lunch detention

4th offense: Warning, change out, guardian notified via referral,  2 days of lunch detention

5th offense: Warning, change out, guardian notified via referral,  3 days of lunch detention

6th offense: Warning, change out, guardian will be contacted for a conference with school administration; assigned ATS (Alternate to Suspension)

Teachers may use their discretion in deciding if a student's dress is appropriate. Any time a member of the staff believes that a student is disrupting the educational process by their appearance, or when the student's safety is concerned, the teacher may send the student to the office. Students whose dress is inappropriate will be removed from the class until the dress is corrected and/or will be given a Wilson loaner shirt to wear (clothing will be returned after the clean Wilson shirt or shorts are returned).
